Fourteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(July 25 through July 31)

Date of Release: 08/01/05

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 14 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 25 through Sunday, July 31.

Of the 11 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in three of the crashes and eight of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seatbelt status of three of the fatalities is not known at this time. Three of the fatalities were riding motorcycles and none were wearing helmets.

Barren, Lincoln and Marshall counties each reported one double fatality crash. Two single fatality crashes occurred in Christian County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Boyle, Butler, Fulton, Jefferson, Letcher and Madison counties.

Through July 31, 2005, a total of 515* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 10 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Two hundred and ninety-seven of these 515 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
