Seventeen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(Aug. 15 through Aug. 21)

Date of Release: 08/22/05

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 17 people died in 14 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, August 15 through Sunday, August 21.

Of the 14 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in seven of the crashes and seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of three of the victims is not known at this time. Two victims were riding a motorcycle and were wearing helmets.

Henry, Jefferson and Warren counties each reported one double fatality crash. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Allen, Clark, Floyd, Jefferson, Menifee, Monroe, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pulaski, Trigg and Webster counties.

Through August 21, 2005, a total of 565* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 33 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Three hundred and twenty-seven of these 565 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
