Date of Release: 10/10/05
Justice Cabinet Press Release
Frankfort, KY: Lieutenant Governor Steve Pence, who also serves as secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, recognized the Kentucky State Police troopers, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement officers, and the Department of Corrections officers who made personal sacrifices to help with Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.
"Throughout the month of September, these brave men and women put their own lives on hold to travel to Louisiana and Mississippi for weeks at a time to help those states recover from a tremendous natural disaster," said Lieutenant Governor Pence. "I want to personally thank all of the officers who took part in this endeavor."
Pence, along with KSP Commissioner Mark Miller, KVE Commissioner Greg Howard, and DOC Commissioner John Rees hosted a picnic today as a way to thank the officers who volunteered their time and services following the hurricane.
KSP sent a total of 108 officers Louisiana and Mississippi in the weeks following the hurricane on a rotating basis. KVE sent a rotation of 22 officers to Mississippi. During their deployment, the officers extended their services as a relief to the local law enforcement in those states. In addition, 91 DOC officers traveled to Louisiana to assist in monitoring approximately 8000 displaced men and women inmates from Jefferson Parish and New Orleans Parish.
"Law enforcement officials from the Gulf Coast region have commended our officers for the fine work they did while aiding in the recovery efforts. I have every confidence that our Kentucky officers made a significant contribution in the wake of Hurricane Katrina," concluded Lieutenant Governor Pence.
