Seven Die on Kentucky Roads During Christmas Holiday

Date of News Release: 12/27/2005

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that seven (7) people died in five (5) separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the 2005 Christmas holiday period, which ran from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23 to 11:59 p.m. on MONDAY , December 26. That's five more fatalities than were reported during last year's holiday.

Of the five fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the crashes and only one of the victims was wearing a safety belt. Fayette and Boyle counties reported one double fatality crash each. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Lincoln, Scott and Simpson counties.

Through December 26, 2005, a total of 960* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is one (1) less than reported for this time period in 2004. Five hundred forty-nine of the 960* fatalities were not restrained.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
