Nine Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Jan. 9 through Jan. 16)

Date of News Release: 01/18/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Jan. 9 through Monday, Jan. 16.

Of the eight fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in one of the crashes and three of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Two of the victims were riding motorcycles and both were wearing helmets.

One double fatality crash involved two motorcycles and occurred in Pulaski County. Three single fatality crashes occurred in Warren County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Barren, Fleming, Letcher and Pike counties.

Through Jan. 16, 2006, a total of 23* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 17 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Ten of these 23 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
