Twelve Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (March 27 through April 2)

Date of News Release: 04/03/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in twelve separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, March 27, 2006, through Sunday, April 2, 2006.

Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in four of the twelve crashes. Ten of the crashes involved motor vehicles and two of them involved motorcycles. Eight of the victims were not wearing seat belts and the seatbelt status of two of the victims is not known. The two motorcycle victims were not wearing helmets.

The twelve single fatality crashes occurred in Daviess, Fayette, Hardin, Jessamine, Knott, LaRue, Madison, McCracken, Monroe, Nelson, Rowan and Wolfe counties.

Through April 2, 2006, a total of 161 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 54 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 161 fatalities, ten were pedestrians and 11 were motorcylcists, seven of whom were not wearing helmets. Of the 140 motor vehicle fatalities, 86 were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of nine is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
