Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (April 3 through April 9)

Date of News Release: 04/10/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 11 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, April 3, 2006, through Sunday, April 9, 2006.

Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in five of the 11 crashes. Ten of the crashes involved motor vehicles and one of them involved a motorcycle. One of the victims was a pedestrian. Six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The motorcycle victim was wearing a helmet.

The 11 single fatality crashes occurred in Breathitt, Breckinridge, Butler, Christian, Henderson, Lawrence, Madison, McLean, Perry, Warren and Woodford counties.

Through April 9, 2006, a total of 179 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 52 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 179 fatalities, 11 were pedestrians and 12 were motorcyclists, 7 of whom were not wearing helmets. Of the 156 motor vehicle fatalities, 96 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 11 is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
