Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (April 17 through April 23)
Date of News Release: 04/24/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 11 people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, April 17, 2006, through Sunday, April 23, 2006.
Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in one of the nine crashes. Eight of the crashes involved motor vehicles and one of them involved a motorcycle. Six of the victims were not wearing seat belts and the motorcycle victim was not wearing a helmet. The seatbelt status of three of the victims is not known.
One triple fatality crash occurred in Simpson County. Eight single fatality crashes occurred in Carter, Christian, Daviess, Hardin, Muhlenberg, Nicholas, Pike and Russell counties.
Through April 23, 2006, a total of 222 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 47 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 222 fatalities, 15 were pedestrians and 14 were motorcyclists, 9 of whom were not wearing helmets. Of the 193 motor vehicle fatalities, 118 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 16 of the victims is not known.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
