Fourteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (May 15 through May 21)
Date of News Release: 05/22/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 14 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, May 15, 2006, through Sunday, May 21, 2006.
Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the 12 crashes. All 12 crashes involved motor vehicles. Ten of the victims were not wearing seat belts.
One double-fatality crash occurred in Hardin County and one double-fatality crash occurred in Metcalfe County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County. The remaining eight single-fatality crashes occurred in Adair, Anderson, Casey, Henderson, Letcher, Madison, Monroe and Trimble counties.
Through May 21, 2006, a total of 290 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 50 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 290 fatalities, 18 were pedestrians and 18 were motorcyclists, 10 of whom were not wearing helmets. Of the 254 motor vehicle fatalities, 164 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 18 of the victims is not known.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
