Fourth of July Holiday Fatalities at Eight
Date of News Release: 07/03/2006
(FRANKFORT, KY)--Preliminary data* indicates that eight (8) people have been killed in eight (8) traffic crashes so far during the Fourth of July holiday. Two (2) single vehicle crashes occurred in Jefferson county. Single vehicle crashes have also been reported in Fayette, Graves, Kenton,Montgomery, Oldham, and Pike counties. Alcohol is a suspected factor in one of the crashes, four victims were restrained and one victim was wearing a helmet.
Last year nine people lost their lives during the July 4 holiday. Of the nine fatalities, alcohol was a suspected factor in five of the crashes. Three of the four motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts and three of the four motorcycle victims were not wearing helmets.
The official holiday period began at 6:00 p.m. (EST) Friday, June 30th and will end at 11:59 p.m, Tuesday, July 4th.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
