Ten Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Dec. 4 through Dec. 10)
Date of News Release: 12/11/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that ten people died in ten separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, through Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006.
All of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one pedestrian was killed. Preliminary data* indicates that alcohol was a factor in two of the crashes. Seven of the motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts.
The motor vehicle fatalities occurred in Barren, Bullitt, Calloway, Hardin, Henderson, Leslie, Logan, Muhlenberg and Ohio counties. The pedestrian fatality occurred in Warren County.
Through Dec. 10, 2006, a total of 850 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 77 fewer than were reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 850 fatalities, 713 were motor vehicle victims, 454 of whom were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of 45 of the victims is not known. Seventy fatalities involved motorcycles, and 46 of those victims were not wearing helmets. There have been ten ATV crash fatalities and none of the victims were wearing helmets. There have been 5 bicycle victims and 52 pedestrians have been killed.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
