Nine Die On Kentucky Roadways During New Year's Holiday Period

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the News Year's holiday period from 6:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.

Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in one of the seven crashes. All of the crashes involved motor vehicles and seven of the nine victims were not wearing seat belts.

One double fatality crash occurred in Breathitt County and one double fatality crash occurred in Woodford County. Two single fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Laurel, Pulaski and Spencer counties.

During 2005-2006 New Year's holiday period, eight fatalities were reported in seven crashes.

Preliminary statistics* indicate that a total of 907 people lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2006. Of the 766 motor vehicle fatalities, 494 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 73 motorcycle fatalities, 48 were not wearing helmets. Of the 10 ATV fatalities, none were wearing helmets. There have been 53 pedestrian fatalities and five bicycle fatalities.

In 2005, a total of 985 people lost their lives on Kentucky roadways.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
