Law Enforcement Agencies Team Up For Central Kentucky Highway Safety Effort

Date of News Release: 01/29/2007

(FRANKFORT, KY) - Four law enforcement agencies teamed up last weekend for a special highway safety effort that covered Fayette, Franklin, Grant, Madison, Scott and Woodford counties. Designated "Blue Lights Over Central Kentucky," the program included road patrols and safety checkpoints that focused on violations of both traffic and criminal laws.

Beginning on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8:00 p.m. and continuing until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday Jan. 28, troopers and canine units from Kentucky State Police posts in Richmond and Dry Ridge joined officers from Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, the Georgetown Police Dept. and the Scott Co. Sheriff's Office in coordinated operations that targeted I-75 in Madison, Fayette, Scott and Grant counties and I-64 in Fayette, Scott, Woodford and Franklin counties.

As a result of these combined efforts, more than 390 citations were issued during the six-hour period including 147 speeding violations, 12 arrests for driving under the influence, 27 criminal arrests for drugs, outstanding warrants or driving on a suspended license and 36 seat belt and child restraint violations.

"The cooperation of all the agencies involved contributed greatly to the success of this operation," said KSP Commissioner Jack Adams. "I commend all the officers and agencies who participated in this worthwhile effort to make the roads safer for the citizens of the Commonwealth."
