(Apr. 30 through May 6)

Date of News Release: 05/07/2007

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 17 people died in 16 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Apr. 30 through Sunday, May 6, 2007.

Sixteen of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one involved a motorcycle. Eleven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Five of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One double fatality crash and two single fatality crashes were reported in Jefferson County. Three single fatality crashes were reported in Henderson County. Two single-fatality crashes were reported in Carroll County and two in Mason County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Clay, Jackson, McLean, Meade, Pendleton and Trigg counties.

Through May 6, preliminary statistics* indicate that 265 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 10 more than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 231 motor vehicle fatalities, 138 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 12 motorcycle fatalities, six were not wearing helmets. Of the 13 ATV fatalities, 12 were not wearing helmets. Nine pedestrians have been killed and a total of 63 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
