Date of News Release: 06/04/2007

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 10 people died in 10 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Tuesday, May 29 through Sunday, June 3, 2007.

Seven of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and two of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of two of the victims is unknown at this time. Three victims were operating motorcycles and one was not wearing a helmet. One of the fatalities was the result of a crash that involved the suspected use of alcohol.

Jefferson County reported two single-fatality crashes. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Boone, Calloway, Carter, Hardin, Johnson, Mason, Muhlenberg and Woodford counties.

Through June 3, preliminary statistics* indicate that 337 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 12 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 283 motor vehicle fatalities, 168 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 25 motorcycle fatalities, 12 were not wearing helmets. Of the 14 ATV fatalities, 13 were not wearing helmets. Fifteen pedestrians have been killed and a total of 84 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
