(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 10 people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Aug. 13 through Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007.
All 10 of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of one of the victims is unknown at this time. Two of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One triple-fatality crash was reported in Lincoln County. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Bell, Greenup, Hardin, Hart, Knox, Muhlenberg and Shelby counties.
Through Aug. 19, preliminary statistics* indicate that 536 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 29 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 432 motor vehicle fatalities, 248 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 65 motorcycle fatalities, 39 were not wearing helmets. Of the 19 ATV fatalities, 15 were not wearing helmets. Nineteen pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 124 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
