"Buckle Up Kentucky" Law Enforcement Challenge Award Recipients Announced

(Frankfort, Kentucky) - The Governor's Buckle Up Kentucky Law Enforcement Awards Luncheon was held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington.

Presentations were made to law enforcement agencies as well as individual officers throughout the state. Mr. Chuck Hurley of the National Safety Council, in Washington, D.C. was the keynote speaker.

The Buckle Up Kentucky campaign was conducted from May 19 through June 1, 2003. During that time, over 150 law enforcement agencies throughout the Commonwealth participated in a high visibility traffic safety enforcement program with the following results:

Drug Arrests -1,237, Other Arrests - 3,357, Fugitives Apprehended - 880, Stolen Vehicles Recovered - 62, Other Citations - 24,721, Seat Belt Citations - 8,325, Child Restraint Citations - 599, Checkpoints Conducted - 920, DUI Arrests - 1,720, Speeding Citations - 23,297

"The purpose of the Buckle Up Kentucky campaign was to raise public awareness regarding seat belts and child restraints," explains Lt. Brad Bates, Commander of the Governor's Highway Safety Program. "By stepping up enforcement, we not only save lives, we reduce serious injuries and protect the safety of our citizens."

Agencies and officers that were honored today include the following:

Division I (1-10 Sworn Officers):

1st Place, Grayson Police Department; 2nd Place, Vanceburg Police Department; 3rd Place, Knox County Sheriff's Department; Officer Award, Officer Tony Cantrell, Grayson Police Department

Division II (11-25 Sworn Officers):

1st Place, Clark County Sheriff's Department; 2nd Place, Middlesboro Police Department; 3rd Place, Franklin County Sheriff's Department; Officer Award, Deputy Matt Green, Franklin County Sheriff's Department

Division III (26-50 Sworn Officers):

1st Place, Bullitt County Sheriff's Department; 2nd Place, Richmond Police Department; 3rd Place, Radcliff Police Department; Officer Award, Deputy Gary Wilson, Bullitt County Sheriff's Department

Division IV (51-150 Sworn Officers)
