Labor Day Holiday Death Toll Drops from Previous Year
(Frankfort, Kentucky) - Preliminary statistics* show that eight people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways this Labor Day holiday. The number of fatalities decreased from the 2002 holiday period during which eleven (11) people died in eleven (11) crashes.
Of the eight fatal Labor Day holiday crashes, preliminary data indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the crashes. Regarding safety equipment: three victims were unrestrained, one victim was wearing a helmet, one victim was a pedestrian, and one person was killed while operating an ATV.
Single fatality crashes occurred in Ballard, Boone, Boyle, Christian, Jefferson, Lincoln, Todd and Wayne counties. One of the crashes involved a motorcycle.
The Kentucky State Police once again participated in Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), a federal program that emphasizes high visibility patrol on interstates and parkways. As a result, no fatalities were reported on these very heavily traveled roadways.
The official Labor Day holiday period ran from 6 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2003 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2003. All statistics are from that time period.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
