October is Crime Prevention Month

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - In celebration of National Crime Prevention Month The Kentucky State Police would like everyone in the commonwealth to know how to protect themselves from the fastest growing crime in the United States: IDENTITY THEFT.

The crime of identity theft claims 1,500 new victims each day and produces over $2 billion a year in financial losses. Everyone is a potential victim.

Identity Theft occurs when a criminal steals your personal information such as your name, social security number, date of birth or financial information and uses this information to receive goods or services.

There are ways you can protect yourself, first do not give out personal information to solicitors, retailers or telemarketers. Never dispose of any personal identifying documents (prescriptions, receipts, bank deposit slips, pay stubs, expired credit cards, insurance policies, credit card applications) without first destroying the material. Contact the credit bureaus below and place a Fraud Alert on your account. This will force the credit bureaus to contact you when they receive an application for a credit report on your account.

If you should become a victim of Identity theft contact the creditor that the theft has affected, then contact the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction where the crime occurred and where you live.
