Trooper Shot/Suspect Dead
in Butler County

Bowling Green, KY - At approximately 2:30 pm CDT on Saturday, August 3, 2002, the Kentucky State Police and Butler County Sheriff's Department received a request to check on the condition of Lemuel Garrison. Family members had expressed concern regarding his well being. At 3:21 pm Trooper Todd Holder, Trooper Jaman Childers and Deputy Randall Martin arrived at the scene, which is located on Leonard Oak Road in northeastern Butler County. A few minutes later, Garrison fired at the officers with Trooper Holder sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The officers returned fire.

The Kentucky State Police Special Response Team was activated, and upon arrival, executed a search warrant of the residence and discovered Lemuel Garrison dead. Garrison, age 56, and a resident of Butler County, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:02 pm by the Butler County Coroner. Preliminary autopsy results indicate Garrison died as the result of gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.

Trooper Todd Holder age 37, a 12 year veteran with Kentucky State Police, has undergone surgery for his wounds and is currently in recovery at the Medical Center at Bowling Green. The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Trooper Jaman Childers age 29, a 7 year veteran with the Kentucky State Police and Deputy Randall Martin were not injured.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing.

An administrative investigation into the incident is ongoing. Pursuant to agency policy, the troopers involved will be placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal review of the shooting.
