Labor Day Holiday Deaths Down Half from Last Year

Frankfort, KY - Preliminary statistics* show that seven people died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways this Labor Day holiday. The number of fatalities decreased drastically from the 2001 holiday period during which twelve (12) people died in eleven (11) crashes.

Of the seven fatal Labor Day holiday crashes, preliminary data indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in four of the crashes. Regarding safety equipment, six victims were unrestrained and one victim was wearing a helmet.

Single fatality crashes occurred in Casey, Clark, Elliott, Knox, Lincoln, Trimble and Whitley counties. One of the crashes involved a motorcycle. (News reports of fatalities in Greenup and Carter counties are not accurate. No fatalities occurred in those two counties over the holiday period.)

The Kentucky State Police once again participated in Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), a federal program that emphasizes high visibility patrol on interstates and parkways. As a result, no fatalities were reported on these very heavily traveled roadways.

"You Drink and Drive. You Lose" was also successful culminating in state police arrests of more than 200 individuals for driving under the influence.

The official Labor Day holiday period ran from 6 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2002 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 2, 2002. All statistics are from that time period.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
