Cadiz, KY. (April 22, 2021) – Troopers with Kentucky State Police, Post 1 are investigating a fatal collision in Trigg County that claimed the life of one person. Around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday evening, Post 1 dispatch received a call from Trigg County Dispatch requesting KSP investigate a two-vehicle collision on US 68/80 on the Lake Barkley bridge between the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and Canton. Members of the Post 1 Collsion Reconstruction Team responded to the collision scene. Initial investigation shows a 2005 Dodge Caravan, operated by John R. Smith, 64 of Clarksville, Tennessee was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on the bridge. Two vehicles, traveling West, were able to avoid colliding with Smith. Smith was unable to avoid colliding with a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by Andrew Amsden, 20 of Cadiz, Kentucky.
Smith was received fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Trigg County Coroner’s Office. Amsden and a passenger in his vehicle were transported by Trigg County EMS to the Trigg County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The investigation continues and is being conducted by Sergeant Eric Fields. Kentucky State Police, Post 1 was assisted on scene by the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office, Trigg County EMS, Trigg County Rescue Squad, and the Trigg County Coroner’s Office.
