Kevil, KY. (May 19, 2021) – Troopers with Kentucky State Police, Post 1 are investigating an early morning collision in Ballard County that claimed the life of two people and left one person injured. At approximately 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, Post 1 dispatch received a call from the Ballard County Sheriff’s Office requesting Troopers respond to the intersection of KY 286 and Myers Road to investigate a two-vehicle, head on collision. Troopers with the Kentucky State Police, Post 1 Reconstruction Team responded to the scene. Preliminary investigation shows James Sanders, 20 of Russellvillle, Kentucky was traveling westbound on KY 286, operating a 2013 Lincoln passenger car. At the same time, Cain M. Oswald, 28 of Flippin, Arkansas was traveling eastbound, operating a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. For an unknown reason, Sanders’ vehicle crossed the center line into the opposite lane of traffic, colliding head on with Oswald.
Sanders was transported from the scene to Baptist Health Hospital in Paducah. He was airlifted to Tennova Healthcare in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in Sanders’ vehicle, Alissa Downing, 19 of Lewisburg, Kentucky, was transported to Mercy Health Lourdes Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Oswald was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ballard County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing by Detective Nathan Moore. The Post 1 Reconstruction Team was assisted on scene by the Ballard County Sheriff’s Office, Ballard County EMS, the Ballard County Coroner’s Office, and the Wickliffe Fire Department.
