Carrie, KY. (July 10, 2021) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating a officer-involved shooting involving KSP Troopers from Post 13. The shooting occurred today at approximately 4:30 a.m. EDT in the Carrie community of Knott County. The investigation is currently ongoing.
In response to a call of a stolen vehicle from a residence, a Trooper responded to the scene and observed the vehicle driving by and initiated a traffic stop. The operator, and lone occupant of the vehicle, fired at the Trooper who then discharged his agency issued weapon in response. The Trooper suffered a gunshot wound during the exchange. A second Trooper arrived on scene and additional gunfire was exchanged with the operator who was struck and wounded. Negotiations then led to the operator of the vehicle exiting with no further incident.
The injured Trooper was transported to Hazard ARH for treatment and has been released. The operator of the vehicle was originally transported to Hazard ARH, but later was transferred to University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, where the individual currently remains in the ICU.
To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s Standard Operating Procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered. Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case.
