Madisonville, Ky. (Hopkins County) – Around 9:05 PM on April 22, 2021, Trooper Cody Kromer, of Kentucky State Police Post 2 made a traffic stop in Hopkins County on Interstate 69, Southbound. The driver provided his operators license and gave consent to search the vehicle. The passenger did not have any form of identification on him and provided false information.
The driver had already exited the vehicle and the passenger was also asked to exit the vehicle. The passenger then moved over into the driver’s seat, and after a struggle, he was able to put the vehicle in gear, and flee South on Interstate 69. The vehicle ramped onto the Pennyrile Parkway, then exited onto US 62 in Nortonville. The vehicle attempted to back into Trooper Kromer’s police car on the exit ramp but Trooper Kromer was able to avoid the collision.
The vehicle turned onto US 41 and continued South where Sergeant Bob Winters successfully deployed a tire deflation device. As the vehicle traveled into Crofton on two flat tires, the driver attempted to turn onto a side road but lost control of the vehicle, entered the ditch, and fled on foot. After a brief foot chase, the driver was apprehended, but not before continuing to resist arrest.
The driver refused to give his name but was later identified by a mobile fingerprint scanning device as Steven Spurlin, 33, of Mortons Gap, KY. He was charged with fleeing or evading police 1st degree (motor vehicle), operating motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs 1st offense (aggravating circumstances), theft by unlawful taking – auto over $10,000, giving an officer a false name or information, theft of identity of another without consent, Fleeing or evading police 2nd degree (on foot), and multiple traffic offenses.
Spurlin was lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center.
