Memorial Service in Honor of Slain Trooper Delano Powell will be on May 11th, 2021 at the Sulphur Cemetery.
Sulphur, KY. (May 04, 2021) – A Memorial Service for slain Trooper Delano Powell will be held on Tuesday, May 11th at 10:30 a.m. at the Sulphur Cemetery located on KY 157(Sulphur Road) near the Sulphur community in Henry County. Post 5 Troopers, dispatchers, their families and the family of Trooper Powell will be in attendance to pay their respects and honor his life and sacrifice. The public and media are invited to join us in honoring Trooper Powell.
Trooper Delano Powell was shot and killed on July 8, 1965 in Breathitt County while serving a warrant. Trooper Powell and a sheriff’s deputy went to the residence of the suspect, who fired a shotgun form the cover of his darkened porch. The deputy pulled Trooper Powell to cover, but he died during transport to the hospital. The suspect was later apprehended and convicted. Trooper Powell was assigned to Post 13 Hazard and had served with the Kentucky State Police for approximately a year and a half. He was survived at the time by his wife and his three(3) year old son. In honor of his service and sacrifice, US 42 in Henry County has been designated the Trooper Delano G. Powell Memorial Highway.
