Jenkins, Ky. (August 30, 2018) – A two vehicle crash on US 23 near the Kentucky and Virginia boarder this morning caused several injuries and resulted in one drivers arrest. Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville received the initial call advising of the collision just before 11:20 a.m. KSP Post 13 was immediately notified of the situation, due to this location being in the Hazard Post district. KSP personnel and several other police agencies from both Kentucky and Virginia were conducting a “Border to Border” traffic safety check on US 23, in close proximity to the crash location. Officers were alerted to the crash by motorist traveling through the checkpoint and responded to the scene.
Investigators initially determined that 51 year old John Henry Gibson of Seco, KY was traveling south on US 23 in a 2005 Chevrolet passenger car when he observed the traffic safety check detail. Gibson turned around on the roadway and began traveling north in the southbound lane of US 23. Gibson’s car collided head-on with a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado which was driven by 59 year old Tony Kiser of Pound, VA. Gibson and two passengers in his car were injured. John Gibson and 51 year old Jennifer Gibson of Seco were transported to Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Whitesburg for medical treatment. Jennifer Gibson was later transported to Pikeville Medical Center for further treatment of non-life threatening injuries. John Gibson was treated and released. The second passenger, 52 year old Banner Gibson of Seco, was airlifted to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, He was later transferred to Holston Valley Medical Center for ongoing medical attention. Tony Kiser refused medical treatment and left the scene with family. There were no passengers in his truck.
John Gibson was charged with 3 counts of Assault 2nd degree, DUI 2nd degree, Reckless Driving and several other traffic offenses. He was lodged in the Letcher County Detention Center. This incident remains under investigation by Detective Scott Caudill with KSP Post 13 in Hazard.
